My College Kitchen: Cooking Essentials, Baking Basics & Tableware Tips

Posted by | College, Home Design, Kitchen Design | 5 Comments

Hello everyone! My name is Keelin and I have been interning for Inspiring Kitchen the past couple months. As an incoming senior in college, I will be living in what my university calls a “Senior House”–this is basically a fancier way to say that I will be living in a small off-campus house with a bunch of girls my age (six others to be exact). Needless to say, I am very excited to move in and start my last year of school.

This “Senior House” will be the first full-sized kitchen I have access to in college and really the first time I have to start cooking for myself.… Read more

How to Tile a Backsplash

Posted by | DIY, Home Design, Remodel | 16 Comments

Have you ever wondered how hard it is to do some of these DIY projects you see on TV or read about in magazines or blogs? Well, I am pretty adventurous when it comes to trying to do projects around my house. I just try to educate myself as much as possible beforehand. In this situation, it has to do with backsplash tile.

TLC had a show called Trading Spaces where homeowners traded homes and did a remodeling project with the help of a trained interior designer. While there were definitely some questionable things done to their neighbor’s homes (grass on the wall???),… Read more

Kitchen Remodel Technical Details

Posted by | Education, Home Design, Kitchen Design | 13 Comments

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, there are more details to consider than just the choice of counter tops, flooring and appliances. Some of the intricacies include working with subcontractors. This third post in our kitchen remodel series is going to address a few topics in this area with Interior Designer Jack Ovadia, offering his expertise.

Inspiring Kitchen:

Jack, who are the subcontractors that we might expect to be working on our project? And is it possible to have just one contractor do all the work?

Jack:

The most ideal situation is to have contractors working on the areas that they specialize in, as they will be able to handle potential obstacles that can arise in the process of working within structures.… Read more

Posted by | Design, Home Design, Interior Decorating, Kitchen remodel, Remodel | 22 Comments

We have made the exciting decision to remodel our kitchen, found our talented interior designer, discussed our ideas, goals and budget and are now ready to move forward into the details of the plan. For this next step in the process, we are going to talk about the kitchen’s layout and materials in our question and answer style with interior designer, Jack Ovadia.

Inspiring Kitchen:

How is a kitchen layout determined? If we want to add an island, what kind of space do we need?

Jack:

Generally, people with smaller families have smaller kitchens. When we start looking at family environments we see pantries, higher cabinets, major cooktops equipped with ranges, extra countertop space for serving and entertaining.… Read more

How to Garden in Balcony Baskets & Planters

Posted by | Education, Gardening, Home Design | 39 Comments

I wish I could say that I have a green thumb. But I don’t. I try. Every year, I try to grow herbs and flowers in balcony baskets. Some years I have better luck than others. But this year, it is going to be different! I was fortunate to be able to attend a Petunia Palooza (how fun is that name!) presentation sponsored by Ball Horticulture at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Ball is the parent company to many companies you may be familiar with like Burpee Home Gardens and Wave Petunias among other partners.

How To Choose Tile For Your Stairs

Posted by | Design, Education, Home Design, Remodeling | No Comments

In my house, remodeling a space is always on my mind. That may mean a small or big project involving the floors, walls, furniture, appliances, lighting, bedding and the list goes on. Over the last couple of years, I have been moving from room to room updating, improving and designing new spaces.  This post is to share a quick lesson on how to choose tile for your stairs.

The entry to my home has stairs that were tiled and then a landing that was carpeted. While the tiles made sense, the carpet definitely didn’t as it accumulated all the dirt from shoes coming in from outside.… Read more
