National Restaurant Association Show 2016 Trend Report

When you bring together a vast group of restaurant, hospitality and foodservice people, you will undoubtedly see a passion for the industry and the opportunity to learn something. This experience took place recently at the 2016 National Restaurant and BAR (Beverage Alcohol for Restaurants) show held at McCormick Place in Chicago.

The NRA Show increased in size from last year without question from an exhibitor and registrant perspective. There were more than 67.000 registrants from around the world in attendance. While this show is not designed for consumers to attend, the outcome of what is learned and shared at this show plays a role in what we encounter when visiting restaurants and utilizing food service locations.… Read more

Trends from the Sweets and Snacks Expo 2016

img_9663The 2016 Sweets and Snacks Expo was held at McCormick Place this past week. Expanding to two halls this year to accommodate the more than 750 exhibitors showcasing their products, the show welcomed over 16,000 industry professionals from over 90 countries.

Trends from the Sweets and Snacks Expo 2016

There were a number of themes that stood out this year with healthy options standing out more than anything. Whether it’s the main ingredient or a flavor contribution, brands are now using quinoa, kale, chickpeas, broccoli and beans to name a few.

This was my first experience with this particular food show so I wanted to get an idea what I was going to see and what brands were there. This show definitely gives you a feeling of fun and enjoyment when you walk through the aisles. Very clever designs when it comes to displays, packaging and themes. The 2015 National Restaurant Show just ended leaving me with lots of interesting products and trends to share with you. While the NRA show is predominantly for those who work in the food service industry, there are definitely items that can be found from the consumer standpoint as well as giving ideas of trends that will potentially be in the retail world for consumers to purchase. In Chicago, March is the time of year where retailers, brands, manufacturers, media, chefs, and restauranteurs travel to McCormick Place to attend the International Home and Housewares Show. It is a show that people like me love! Three buildings filled with the latest kitchen, dining, laundry, garage, bathroom and closet finds. Miles and miles of cooking equipment, tools and gadgets; dinnerware, flatware, glassware, barware; gadgets, tools, cutlery, cutting boards; electrics from rice cookers to espresso machines to air fryers to water purifiers and beyond; food storage containers, bakeware, pepper mills, linens and the list continues. This week, I had the opportunity to attend the National Restaurant Association Show as well as the International Wine, Spirits and Beer event in Chicago. These trade shows are intended to showcase products, operational equipment, services, food and beverage items from over 1800 exhibitors for those who have some connection to the restaurant space. The big day arrived here in Chicago on Saturday, March 15, as anyone playing any role in the housewares world arrived in Chicago for the 2014 International Housewares Show held at McCormick Place. Retailers, big and small, came to see what exciting new products they could share with their customers. Manufacturers of everything from cookware to kitchen utensils to electrics to dinnerware to glassware to storage materials and beyond all came to display their wares.
