Easy solutions to keep your New Year’s resolutions by substituting ingredients, supporting your muscles and energy and choosing lower calorie drinks.

That first step into the new year means you can continue doing things the way you always have or you can take the plunge into changing your habits to a path that makes you happy. I guess you could call it a resolution but I really think it is just a coincidental benefit of the start of the new year.

However you choose to look at it, that first step means a lot. For me, it is to live a healthy lifestyle when it comes to exercise and diet but to also spend quality time with those that matter most. Since I love to cook, it is the perfect opportunity to bring everyone together for meals or simple coffee chats. But it also means that with my busy schedule, I will be prepared with snacks and other solutions to incorporate protein into my meals.

There are some really easy ways to stay focused on your healthy living goals. For example, simple substitutions that go unnoticed other than when you realize you are feeling better. You don’t have that sense of being deprived of anything.  In this post, I’m sharing three ideas that can all be found at your local Walmart. Plus, the best of all prizes, a chance to win a gym/health club membership! How’s that for a great start to the new year!

Simple Substitutions

1) Splenda Naturals Stevia

A little coffee chat with the girls meant a steaming pot of coffee and a freshly baked banana bread made with Splenda Naturals Stevia. Some of the key features I like about this brand are:

  • 100% natural
  • No aftertaste
  • Nothing artificial
  • Zero calories
  • Easy to bake with

If you want to see for yourself, try the recipe I made and shared with the girls. Delicious and no-guilt ingredients. No one even noticed the missing white sugar!

BANANA BREAD RECIPE

Ingredients
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 ¼ cups mashed bananas
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1½ cups SPLENDA® Naturals Stevia Sweetener, Granulated
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions
Preheat oven to 325° F
Spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
In a large bowl, blend together eggs, buttermilk, applesauce and bananas.
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt.
Add SPLENDA® Sweetener and stir into the banana mixture.
Stir in pecans.

Spread batter into prepared pan.
Bake 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

ENTERTAINING

2) Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold

When you are entertaining, no need to feel uncomfortable about not having an ice cold beer in your hands or thinking you should drink water all night long. There are options available to you to keep you from diverting off the path you started at the beginning of the year. Like this Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold beer which is a light lager with a golden taste. It is triple filtered, brewed with organic grains and free of artificial colors and flavors. With 2.5g carbs and 85 calories, you can enjoy a toast with friends without feeling like you have to spend hours at the gym. But remember to enjoy responsibly!

EXERCISE AND ENERGY

3) Optimum Nutrition

Essential Amino Energy

Everyone knows that your success is going to happen faster by combining healthy eating and exercise. As you prepare to go to the gym, you may be looking for a boost of energy or you may just be having a day where you could use some support. This fruit flavored mix has caffeine from natural sources to help with muscle recovery, energy and focus. It’s easy to make and convenient if you want to take a can to work. All you need to do is mix the powder into cold water and shake it up. As I always have my water bottle with me, it’s ultra convenient.  The bonus is each serving only has 5 calories and no sugar.

Gold Standard 100% Whey

With Gold Standard Whey, you are packing 24 grams of protein into every serving to support your muscle building needs after training. No matter what level athlete you are, this is designed to help you achieve your fitness goals. It’s also gluten-free. So, after a game of tennis, some weights and stretching, this 120 calorie shake is filling and nutritious.

Protein Crisp

As I run from meeting to meeting, having protein bars in my bag is a real solution to curb hunger and control my desire to snack on things that don’t align with my goals. These bars are filled with 20 grams of protein, gluten-free and have a sweet/salty flavor which gets rid of my craving. They taste like toffee which makes me feel like I am having a treat even though I am making smart choices. Try them yourself and see how good they taste!
