Dinner and a movie. An evening out with some good food and entertainment. A way to temporarily escape real life and immerse yourself in some drama, intrigue, comedy or action packed stories. Such a fun plan, right? We just need to choose a movie and then coordinate our dinner reservation so that we get to the theater in time. And we can’t forget traffic! But there is good news as Cinebistro has got this all figured out for us as we discovered on a recent evening out.

With Halloween around the corner, we found a theater that was showing a classic show: Beetlejuice. Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and of course, Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, show what happens when nice ghosts want to make their home unlivable to the family that moved in.

Dinner and a Movie

At Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie, we discovered that the newly remodeled theater called CMX Cinebistro, offers an upscale movie experience along with a full gourmet menu and bar. Now, if popcorn and Twizzlers are your thing, no worries. They are there for you. But if a nice meal to go along with an entertaining movie are what you have in mind, then you should check this theater out.

There are a number of very notable things about this environment that set it apart from other movie houses. The design of the theater is contemporary. (Photo courtesy of CMX Cinemas)

In the theater itself, you will notice that the seating is in pairs making for a nice date night. Just a note that this specific theater is for adults only. No kids allowed here. However, in the second theater within the mall (near the Barnes and Noble) called CMX Market, families are welcome. These massive chairs are actually recliners. And don’t worry about getting a chill in the theater – other than from a scary movie – as each guest is provided with a fresh blanket.

As I mentioned, this theater offers a full menu. It was recommended to us to come a little early to the theater so we could relax, order a cocktail, appetizers and our main course to be served to us once the show began. All the seating offers a tray table that swivels out of the chair to make it comfortable to dine and watch the show. You can also press a call button if you want to order another snack or cocktail.

Dinner and Drinks

The evening we were at the theater, we ran into some friends, giving us the opportunity to catch up over cocktails and appetizers. P.S. that scary creature in the background is from a video playing across from our seats….

  • The Shrunken Head: Peach Schnapps, Bacardi Gold, Blue Curacao, Malibu Coconut, OJ, Sprite
  • The Sandworm (Pumpkin Pie Martini): Stoli Vanilla, Kahlua, Bailey’s Butterscotch Schnapps, Pumpkin Syrup
  • Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice: Vodka, Midori, Chambord, Blue Curacao, Sour Mix, Cranberry Juice

When it was time to go into the theater, we got comfortable in the big recliners. Dinner was brought to us a short time later. We ordered the Shrimp Mac and Cheese which was the perfect dish for this movie. While there is a small light on the back of the chair’s arm, it is dark in the theater. This could make it a bit mysterious if you ordered a dish that you were uncertain of the ingredients. In our case, it was lots of shrimp and cheesy pasta!

Our server told us how good the desserts were which made choosing just one quite challenging! We decided on this Deconstructed Peanut Butter Pie. Rich and decadent but worth every bite!
